How it’s figured
Volume = length × width × (depth ÷ 12). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Bag count assumes standard 1-cubic-foot bags — the common topsoil bag size — and rounds up. Fresh topsoil settles roughly 10–20% as it packs down and rain works through it; the 15% buffer splits the difference. For most new beds, 4–6 inches of topsoil over loosened native soil is plenty.
