Square foot gardening takes the guesswork out of spacing. Enter your bed size, add squares of each crop, and this planner totals your plants — warning you before you overplant. Spacing follows classic square-foot guidelines: 1 per square for big plants like tomatoes, up to 16 for small ones like carrots and radishes. For bed-building basics, see our raised bed gardening guide.

Spacing reference
Plants per square foot follow standard square-foot gardening spacing: 1 per square for large plants (tomato, pepper, broccoli, kale, cucumber on a trellis), 4 for medium (lettuce, chard, garlic), 9 for small (beans, beets, turnips, spinach), 16 for tiny (carrots, radishes). Give vining or trellised crops the north edge so they don’t shade the rest.
