How it’s figured
Each crop’s key dates come from your average frost dates: start indoors = last spring frost minus the crop’s indoor-start weeks; sow outdoors = last spring frost plus its outdoor-sow weeks; sow for fall = first fall frost minus (days to maturity + 14 days of slack). Dates are long-term averages from published tables (Old Farmer’s Almanac and Extension sources); a ZIP maps to the nearest of 85 reporting cities. Averages, not guarantees.
